Anitra Frazier saved my cat’s life.5
12 years ago, when my Pywacket became diabetic, doctors were prescribing so-called high fiber dry food — not much different than the food that was causing the epidemic of diabetes in the first place.

After reading Anitra’s last book, I was talking to one of the leading experts in feline diabetes who offered up one simple line. “I have to agree with her on one very basic point! Cats are carnivores.”

That may sound obvious now, but it was the first moment I realized that my poor sick kitty didn’t need the meat flavored cereal that that same expert was prescribing. My cat needed meat, and lots of it!!

Pywacket lived well with diabetes for six years with fewer vet visits than ever. His pre-diabetes asthma was mysteriously cured, and he died of old age at 19.5. Now Anitra has updated her book and I was first in line.

She has already answered questions I spent hours on the internet trying to find, especially what if anything to use to supplement a cat’s diet. I do admit that I am not up to feeding raw food as Anitra has long suggested. I have 2 little kids at home, and even a small risk is too much. Still, following Anitra’s basic recommendations using high quality wet foods and adding fresh chicken, I have seen my new cats become little fluff bunnies, long haired cats with NO matts ever!

Anitra Frazier understands cats from the slow “I love you blink” to diet, to what it is like to live with these amazing creatures. for my 2 new cats, the latest edition of her wonderful book will stand as my first reference for a long time. Buy it. Study it! You will save thousands in vet bills and for the first time perhaps, truly understand your amazing animals.

Thank you Anitra! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Very helpful reference4
I have an earlier version of The Natural Cat and have consulted it so many times when I have health or diet concerns for my cats. It has helpful advice on so many different topics — from nutrition, to diarhea, coat to nails. I highly recommend this book for any pet owner who is looking for alternatives to always running to the vet or giving medicine.

K. Kuhn5
The Natural Cat is the best feline guidance available. I have been using Anitra’s book for three decades, and still refer to it. The section on pilling alone is worth the price of the book. Pilling was always a traumatic experience under the best of circumstances. After following Anitra’s instructions with great success (the first time!) my cat/s and I never looked back. This is but one positive example of many.

I often give this book as a gift, evoking applause and gratitude from humans and their beloved cats every time. Everyone who has or loves cats will want to own this book. It is a must for first time feline caregivers.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. First Drop, But Not The Last…Thank Goodness4
If you’re not already familiar with Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, go no further than to your nearest bookstore or online connection and look them up, because First Drop of Crimson is a spinoff novel in an already well developed world. Frost doesn’t waste a lot of time explaining that world to new readers here. It was done in a rather cursory (and if you’re unfamiliar with the characters and world, confusing) manner. That’s not a complaint, as I am very wonderfully familiar with the world and the characters, but it’s something I believe a new reader should know. Also, if you’re familiar with the series, but haven’t read all four published to date, I don’t recommend you read First Drop of Crimson (yet), as there are things and characters mentioned in this book that WILL be spoilers unless you’ve read them all.

Okay, now that the Public Service Announcement (PSA) is out of the way, let’s talk about First Drop of Crimson. I was very excited when I learned of this spinoff, and like many other readers, thought it would be great to spend more time with Spade, as he’s been a favored secondary character throughout the Night Huntress series. In First Drop of Crimson, Spade is called to the aid of Denise Macgregor (Cat’s best friend from the Night Huntress series) when Denise gets stuck with a demon problem courtesy of a distant and deceitful relative. While Spade starts out as a slightly reluctant assist, he quickly changes his tune when the spark from their initial meeting (in the Night Huntress Series) turns into a conflagration. Even Denise’s humanity (and Spade doesn’t do lasting relationships with humans…anymore) isn’t enough to keep Spade from giving up his heart when he lends a hand. What’s an autocratic, former landed gentry in regency England, to do?

With a cast of characters that is pleasantly familiar, this novel is evenly and quickly paced, and after the abrupt start (Denise loses a cousin, finds a demon, and gets help from a vampire all within the first twenty-five to thirty Kindle clicks) the ride smoothes out and the story takes off in a pleasing direction.

That’s not to say I didn’t have any issues with First Drop of Crimson. I did. I wasn’t as enamored of Denise for a main character as I was of Spade (who I just adore). I didn’t dislike her, really, she just didn’t make the sort of impact that I’m used to Frost making with her characters. The romantic aspects between the two of them developed in a relatively realistic time frame, but by the third or forth time Denise tried to control her wayward heart by assuring herself that Spade’s behavior was an act (that’ll make sense when you read the story), or that her feelings were too soon after the death of her spouse, I was bored with reading that as an excuse. Also, without including any spoilers, there were a few aspects of the denouement of the conflict between demon and vampire/human-ish that seemed a bit too pat to be ultimately satisfying.

On a brighter note, I was pleased that Frost was able to bring beloved (or fondly bemoaned, as in Ian’s case) characters from the Night Huntress series into a new and expanded venue and still keep them recognizable. That’s a big stumbling block for a lot of authors even book-to-book, let alone jumping series’ and genres like Frost did here. And that’s another PSA I should’ve mentioned – admittedly, I didn’t do any research on it other than knowing that Frost was releasing an expanded-world novel in a spin off, but I was surprised (not unpleasantly, as I like the sub-genre) to find out that unlike the Night Huntress series, which is more a paranormal urban fantasy series, Night Huntress World series seems to be set to be more of a traditional paranormal romance series, in that each book features a different character finding an HEA (as much “ever-after” Frost allows, anyway – and she does tend to get a bit deadly to her secondary and ancillary characters, so who knows). I say “seem” only because the next book in the spinoff series (Eternal Kiss of Darkness, set to be out July 27th, 2010) features the mighty Mencheres – master vamp to the nth degree – and a new female lead, but I don’t know for sure if that trend will continue with other secondary characters from the NH/NHW series.

I’d definitely recommend First Drop of Crimson, but I’d do it a bit more forcefully for those fans of paranormal romance series than urban fantasy junkies. And for newbies to the world, here are the books I’d recommend you read first:
Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1)
One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 2)
At Grave’s End (Night Huntress, Book 3)
Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, Book 4)

First Drop of Crimson5
It has been a year since Denise lost her husband by paranormal means. It’s only normal that she wouldn’t want to have anything to do with that world after such a loss. But when evil rears its ugly head, she’ll have no say in the matter. With Cat and Bones on the other side of the world, Denise’s only help comes from Spade, master vampire. Ever since meeting they’ve always felt a pull towards each other. Plus there’s definitely an attraction on both sides, and at the same time neither of them will admit it. Spade refuses to fall in love with a human again and Denise wants nothing to do with the world of vampires. Stubborn creatures, but you gotta love them.

I absolutely loved this book, a must read. First Drop of Crimson was a fun, enticing read. This story was refreshing, dark and passionate. Spade and Denise are magic, their chemistry jumps off the page. Jeaniene Frost is a master at pulling you into a story from page one, and that’s exactly what you get with this book. I love that Spade got his own book. I found him quite interesting in the Night Huntress series and was hoping we get to learn more about him.

Fantastic! Amazingly witty and unforgettable!5
I absolutely loved this book! So, I admit, I was really bummed when she announced that she was going to be writing her Night Huntress World series based on the supporting characters of her Night Huntress novels instead of keeping the focus on Cat and Bones. I started First Drop of Crimson with somewhat low expectations and a little anamosity, BUT, after reading this…I won’t ever doubt her again. She has carved herself a place in cement as my favorite author. She was able to pull this off and make me adore these characters (Spade and Denise) just like I adored Cat and Bones. It was really fantastic! Romance, action, well developed and likable characters, witty, extremely well-written and a great story line.

I can’t say enough good things about this book…or any of her other books for that matter. Jeaniene Frost has the sexiest leading men and the most intruiging heroines! Ian’s going to be hilarious to read about if she gets around to him!

About the Author

Jeaniene Frost lives with her husband and their very spoiled dog in Florida. Although not a vampire herself, she confesses to having pale skin, wearing a lot of black, and sleeping in late whenever possible. And while she can’t see ghosts, she loves to walk through old cemeteries. Jeaniene also loves poetry and animals, but fears children and hates to cook. She is currently at work on the next novel in her bestselling Night Huntress series.

Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air Description:

Addressing the sustainable energy crisis in an objective manner, this enlightening book analyzes the relevant numbers and organizes a plan for change on both a personal level and an international scale-for Europe, the United States, and the world. In case study format, this informative reference answers questions surrounding nuclear energy, the potential of sustainable fossil fuels, and the possibilities of sharing renewable power with foreign countries. While underlining the difficulty of minimizing consumption, the tone remains positive as it debunks misinformation and clearly explains the calculations of expenditure per person to encourage people to make individual changes that will benefit the world at large.

A Must Read if discussing sustainable or renewable energy5
This book is an essential resource for understanding energy policy as it relates to conservation and to renewable resources.

I’ve just been listening to yet another “news” report pointing out that compact fluorescent light bulbs don’t save much energy because an incandescent light bulb will also heat your house.

Coincidentally I had just read the part of this book dealing with this myth, so I was able to confidently mutter under my breath “true, but only in the winter (when you need the heating) and only if you are heating inefficiently using electricity.”

This book puts real numbers to a lot of hand-waving arguments which are used to justify grandiose claims made for different renewable energy sources or to imply that we could save the world if we all just unplugged our mobile phone chargers. Some of the arguments stand up when the numbers are put in, but many don’t. When you see what the numbers are, it becomes evident how unrealistic and ineffectual many of the proposals are.

Is it worth unplugging a power block when not in use? Can planes be made more efficient? How much space would solar farms or a wind farms need to occupy to meet our energy needs? How much agricultural land would be required for bio-diesel? All these questions (and many more) are answered.

What makes this book really stand out is that it converts energy amounts to comprehensible units (kilowatt-hours per person per day), supplies copious references for the numbers used, and provides the calculations on which the arguments are based. (Detailed calculations are presented in appendices for the math-averse and should be accessible to anybody with a basic knowledge of physics).

Note. Although this book is primarily aimed at a UK audience (energy consumption figures are based upon UK patterns, and land use proposals are related to UK locations), the discussions are of global applicability.

Do the numbers!5
This book is essential for anyone thinking about energy policy. It excels because MacKay does not espouse one specific solution, but rather teaches the reader how to create solutions and evaluate them. He emphasizes that the numbers must add up — total energy production must equal total energy consumption.

In a way the book is very simple. He leads the reader by the hand in estimating the energy requirements of society – transportation, heat, food, gadgets, and so on. He similarly helps you make credible estimates of achievable production from sources such as sunlight, tides, hydro, nuclear, wind, coal, and oil.

Like a good physicist, MacKay is able stand back and estimate these numbers top-down from first principles, with just enough depth to generate numbers that are credible to you and good enough for policy making.

The charts, graphs, tables, and pictures are extensive and clear.

If you have a particularly loved energy source [wind?] or a particularly hated one [coal?] you can “do the numbers” and build your own energy policy. The only requirement is that the numbers add up!

Essential purchase5
I work for an environmental watchdog in New Zealand. I flicked through the first few pages of “Sustainable Energy – without the hot air” as it sat on a colleague’s desk, took it back to my own desk and read it for two hours straight, got online and bought my own copy. It’s that good.
For a start, this is how environmental science should be communicated; crystal clear text and honest graphs, with simplified theory and ballpark calculations that anyone can follow, backed up by empirical data as a check on results, real examples, frequent references, and explanations of limitations.
But the thinking behind it is every bit as good. MacKay is entirely pragmatic about energy supply and demand, never preachy, and he is game enough to admit when his results surprise even himself. If he is cautiously optimistic in his conclusions, it is because he has laid out a number of justifiable options.
Buy it. Better still, buy it and read it.

The Best Place To Start5
I always start with Rick Steves when I am planning a trip. I found his discussions of places I was interested in seeing during this trip to France to be informative and true to his “off the beaten path” roots. Although I admit that with his popularity some of his paths are getting pretty well trodden these days as well.

I think the secret to finding a good guide book is finding one that suits your traveling style. Rick Steves is probably not for every traveler but for those who want an experience that is a bit less formal than many of the other big name books, his books are a good starting point.

This was the first guidebook I bought and, although I’ll read others, it will probably be the one book I take with me when I leave for France.

Love to Travel5
Rick Steves travel books are excellent. He tells you interesting and helpful infromation we did not find in other books.

His language books have such helpful phrases and info too.

France 20105
What can I say, Rick Steve’s does it again with his latest update on France! I usually buy his country guide along with the matching Michelin Green Guide for any European Country we plan on visiting. An excellent combination!

Last Chance Description:

Genre: LGBT Vampire Paranormal

Aric Christian is the wildly smart PhD candidate specializing in Molecular Biology. With a willowy body bordering on thin, slight hips, and even slighter waist, Aric’s hard muscles and steel strength bends but doesn’t break. Long blackish hair dips in his hazel eyes when he’s not wearing his rimless glasses. At times, he turns into quite a different creature, and is working desperately to seek a cure.

Stu Hamilton is the wildly popular college wide receiver, and big man on campus. He’s tall, broad shouldered, finely tuned and has broad hands, perfect to jump and catch the ball. He’s all muscle and grace and blue, blue eyes. Mussed blond hair layered and tapered down to his nape fuels his reputation as the guy who breezes through life. Hidden from his friends is his family’s secret – he’s from a long line of vampire-slayers. Turning away from that life, he wants nothing to do with blood feuds, men of the dark night and killing.

Then Aric bumps into Stu, or rather his football, and their lives are forever intertwined. Will these born enemies find a way toward love?

Last Chance by Viki Lyn5
Last Chance is nerd vs jock college boys themed story mixed with a very light and funny intake on a vampire gothic one. Even if Aric is a little older than Stu, post graduate and under graduate, both of them are basically still young boys with the need to find their real path in life and an independent one from their respective family. On both Aric than Stu’s shoulders weight the expectations of their families and this is greatly conditioning them.

Aric is a Life Sciences student, too pretty for his own good and gay. If not for being cute like an exotic elf (he has Japanese origins), Aric is a classical nerd, with all the prejudices nerds have on jocks: he admires from afar their muscular bodies, but he doesn’t judge them able of rational thinking. And when one of them knock him down with a football ball on his head, it doesn’t help on his idea; but Stu is not your classical jock, he is also a Lit student with a passion for Romantic poets and the firm belief that true love is out there for him, and he has to wait for it. Now, it’s not that Stu is a total virgin, but to a drunken night out, he prefers a little chat in front of a coffee.

Just like that, with these two characters who play to tear down the stereotype on nerds and jocks, the story would be nice, but the author added the spicy of the paranormal element: Aric was bitten by a vampire and now he is slowly turning into one; he is desperately searching for a cure, using his studies to find a serum and in this moment he has not time for love, above all if love has the face of a straight jock who has no experience at all with guys.

On the other hand Stu is not exactly the dumb jock he appears to be: he is from a long line of vampire slayers, and he is trying to deny his heritage; he is not mean enough to kill the bad “vampires”, he seems always to find a reason to justify them. And when he discovers Aric’s problem, instead of considering him one more fledging vampire to kill, he proclaims himself his protector, never mind that Aric is older and more experienced than him, and that after all, Stu is not exactly the most skilled vampire slayer on the game. Lucky for him, his older, and gay, brother Corbin is there to help, since, truth be told, Stu is facing the issue like it was a big game he has to win, not really like a life risking battle.

In all of this, Aric is strongly trying to convince himself that, first he has not to fall for a straight jock who is probably only momentarily bi-curious, and second that he is too dangerous for Stu, not only since he is a vampire, but also since he is gay, and this means ruining Stu’s perspective for a professional future in the NFL. But his mind says one thing and his body does exactly the opposite, fully enjoying debauching the fair headed angel to make him passing to the “dark” side, in more meanings than the most obvious (Aric, by the way, has very long and luscious jet black hair).

Never once I had the feeling that Aric or Stu were really in danger if not of loosing their hearts to love, and so Last Chance is basically a cute and sweet college romance.

A must for anyone interested in health and fitness!5
I purchased this book to both review and enhance my knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I was most impressed by the step-by-step organization of the material. The self tests are easy to follow and understand. As a personal trainer, I highly (make that strongly) recommend this book for anyone interested in bettering their understanding of the structures within the human body.

Buy this reference5
This is a good book to be used as a reference for A and P especially if you find textbooks a little too much to read. This book is great for anatomy and physiology students in college. The info is given in a concise, but informative matter. The material in this book is easy to study from. However, I also used the following books which are also available on amazon.com:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
(Vol 1) ISBN: 0971999619
(Vol 2) ISBN: 0971999627
If you want to know the kind of questions that most A and P teachers ask on college exams, buy the last two books. …

HELPFUL, but not the best!4
I ordered this book because I was taking an Anatomy and Physiology class at my high school. I figured that it could probably help me understand some things better if I could have another source other than the book that I already use. It didn’t fail me. This book basically went in just about the same order as my school book, and it provided me with in depth, yet practical, information about certain topics that I really couldn’t comprehend from my teacher. It has a lot of good diagrams, and it explains the chemical processes of the body nicely. If you are in a class of this sort, I would advise you to get this book. It could really help you out if you just read it.

Review
Review all major topics connected with anatomy and physiology using an excellent title which is appropriate for both self-teaching or as a refresher course before exams. High school and college level students as well as many an adult will find this a thorough, easily-understood review of all elements of anatomy, with plenty of diagrams and illustrations for quick reference. — Midwest Book Review

    Excellent atlas for microbiology students5
This atlas would be an excellent purchase for anyone interested in microbiology or for those students taking an introductory microbiology course (especially clinical/medical microbiology). The authors have included many common tests and stains performed in the laboratory, and contrary to what a previous reviewer has posted, this atlas contains many photographs that would be beneficial to those students having difficulty with bacterial identification in the lab. The authors have provided concise but relavent background information for all topics covered. There are only a few problems with the atlas. Aside from the fact that it is an unbound looseleaf package, for some the organization may leave something to be desired. Also, for those taking more advanced micro courses, the atlas may need to be supplemented with other material.

    Great Book for Undergrad Students4
I am an undergrad nursing student, and I can attest that this book is a great companion to microbiology lab activities. You can look up the microorganism you are viewing under the scope and compare what you see to the image the book displays. This is very helpful in this respect. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I do not care for the way it is organized. Overall, however, I would highly recommend this atlas to any microbiology student.

If you have the lab manual, you don’t need the atlas!3
I highly recommend that you don’t spend the extra money on the photographic atlas if you have purchased the lab manual (Laboratory Theory and Applications) by the same authors. There is nothing special about it and it has all the same pictures that are in the lab manual…..If you don’t plan on getting the lab manual then it is very interesting and I recommend it.

    A cornerstone building block.5
The main reason I picked up this book was to help teach my 3 year old the alphabet but after 2 letters (one per day) I am amazed at how much more this book really is. I am using it as a daily devotional for my 3 year old daughter and my 7 year old son.

What I really like is how it is designed to teach children to learn and live Gods word but it teaches them to do so out of love, with stong moral values. The stories are engaging and both of my children enjoy them.

We hadnt put the book down for very long when my children began to fuss over a toy, we reread the “B” story, then without any further prompting my son resolved the issue through timed sharing, even apologized to his sister for his bad attitude.

When it was time for bedtime stories my son asked if we could do more letters instead of our other Bible stories.

This book is a must have for every Christian family.

    good starter5
As a place to start discussing Christian behavior with your children, this is great. Each letter of the alphabet is taught with a verse and a short story about behaving the way God commands us to.

The only problem I have with the book is it is extremely unrealistic in that the children never encounter any sort of negative reaction from their friends for desiring to obey God. I know that from my own experience as a Christian child in the public school system, this is just not possible. You will want to make sure you discuss these sorts of situations with your children in addition to reading these stories.

Heartily recommend this as a devotional book5
We are really enjoying this book with our 2 1/2 year old daughters. The format: a Bible verse is featured on each two-page spread, followed by a brief explanation of the terms in the verse and a story/ object lesson that applies the verse in a real life situation.
We are very careful in how we want to impart God’s Word to our children…not too babyish, flippant, or foolish, but not above their understanding, dry or boring either. Our girls can really relate to the object lessons, and discuss the verses throughout the day. We would like to buy more books from this author.

Cole Provides Top Tier Paranormal Romance4
I would be surprised if there was anyone familiar with Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series who wouldn’t agree that for the genre, it’s firmly entrenched in the top tier of paranormal romance series. Cole is an exceptionally talented author with an immense imagination and stringent attention to detail who writes intricate, emotional, sensual stories that hold the readers attention and provide hours of delightful reading. All that being said, for various reasons I haven’t loved EVERY book in the series, and Pleasure of a Dark Prince is one that I didn’t love.

Lucia the Valkyrie is the Archer; the best in the world. The goddess of her religion both provides her skill and demands her chastity in return for saving her life when, as a willful child of sixteen, she made a mistake that dropped her into the clutches of an ancient evil. Garreth MacRieve is the dark prince, brother of the missing king of the Lykae Clan Lachlain MacRieve, and one of the few lykae who believe his brother is still alive. During a rugby match, Garreth catches the scent he’s been hoping for nearly a millennium to smell, his mate. And so begins the dogged chase to catch, woo, and win the woman fate has determined is his destiny. The pursuit spans years and continents, and Garreth gives up everything to protect and pursue his lass, until he finally catches her at the mouth of the amazon river. He will brave the dangers of the green hell itself to keep her by his side and win her to his, but Lucia’s secrets will haunt them both – and may lead to the destruction of everything and every one. Apocalypses are dangerous that way.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince is a good, solid read, but I had some issues with it on a personal level. I found the character-driven parts of the plot (the relationship aspect in particular) didn’t mesh as well with the plot-driven parts (stuff dealing with The Accession and the entirety of the epilogue) as other books. I was a little thrown by the beginning of the book because it starts at a period back in time prior to, and then congruent with, the happenings in the first book of the series, A Hunger Like No Other. I know that this series has had several overlapping timelines in the books, but for some reason it bothered me more this time than it has in the past. This is not a critique, it’s a personal issue – because I tend to be a very linear thinker, I have a problem with a series that doesn’t follow a linear flow. I UNDERSTAND why IAD doesn’t – and why, in fact, it can’t, as the players of The Accession start to move into position – but it’s still something I struggle with and it DID, in this case, lessen my overall enjoyment of this book. I also generally dislike when the main conflict between a male and female lead in a romance novel is based solely on lack of communication and dishonesty. Again – NOT a critique of Cole’s choice to write it that way, but as a personal bugaboo, the absolute lack of honest communication between Garreth and Lucia through the whole of the book wore on me and made me feel like they were less interested in a relationship that would last through eternity and more interested in out-maneuvering each other to get the other to do what they wanted.

The other major issue I had was Lucia herself. I never fully warmed up to her. She had her good points, don’t get me wrong, but I had a HUGE issue with her pride. I can understand being proud of yourself for accomplishments, and commend that sort of self esteem, but Lucia’s skill with a bow was given to her by a goddess – she didn’t EARN it – so the way she wields that ego around because of it rubbed me the wrong way. Now, that issue IS addressed satisfactorily late in the book, but that doesn’t change the way she was from the first. I also found her to be a bit naive and selfish, which is what landed her in hot water to begin with, really, but after a few centuries, one would hope that would wear off a bit. It does eventually during this book, but again, it didn’t sit well with me at first. And the cruelty she and Regin rained down on Garreth for a full year was a bit horrifying and left me wondering how he could possibly forgive her. I never felt I really got a satisfactory answer to that.

I firmly believe that the issues I had with Pleasure of a Dark Prince had nothing to do with the book not being great or Cole not writing well. Each issue I had was based on personal preference and I’m not criticizing, just sharing how I felt about it. I very much enjoyed the book as a whole, and found the entire Amazonian trip to be a lot of fun to read, with some VERY touching, funny, and gut-clenching moments. I would absolutely recommend the series (and have) to paranormal romance AND urban fantasy fans alike, as Cole writes story and characters I totally groove on. And Nucking Futs Nix is now and will always be one of my favorite characters of ALL times in ANY book over every genre.

Hot Werewolf and Valkyrie Romance that Burns the Pages (A- Grade)5
The ninth book in this series, Pleasures of a Dark Prince, is about Garreth MacRieve, the dark prince of the Lykae (werewolves) and Lucia the Huntress, a Valkyrie who is the world’s most skilled archeress. Kresley has written another engaging a couple who may lust for each other until they ache, but makes sure the reader keeps in mind that attraction doesn’t necessarily mean true love and that these two must get to know one another through communication and respect first.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince begins right before the events in the first book in this series, A Hunger Like No Other. Garreth, the current king of the Lykae, and his clan have come to reside in Louisiana. The half-mad Valkyrie soothsayer Nix sends Lucia on a mission to get rid of some pesky kobold demons that are also in the area. What Lucia doesn’t know is that Garreth is her mate and he can scent her while he plays a rousing game of Rugby. He’s been waiting a lifetime for her and when a Lykae finds their mate, they will stop at nothing until they claim them, which means the most intense mating experience ever. After Garreth witnesses Lucia’s great archery techniques, he is both equally turned on and astounded. Now the chase is on, or rather Garreth will respectfully court her because he doesn’t want to end up like another one of his Lykae clansmen, Bowen, (hero from Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night, book 3) who is close to turning into a mindless feral beast.

Even though Lucia is very attracted to Garreth, especially because of his Scottish accent and the way he pronounces her name as Lousha, she can’t be claimed or romanced by this wolf lothario. Lucia must remain chase because she sacrificed herself to the goddess Skathi who gave Lucia her archery skills after she was saved from a fate worse than death when she was sixteen. Lucia was the victim of Cruach, a very nasty and evil individual. As long as Lucia remains abstinent, she will be able to defend herself from Cruach, also know as the Broken Blood One, who rises every five hundred years during the Accession and searches for Lucia so he can claim her once again. If Lucia has sex, she’ll lose her archery skills and will be vulnerable to an attack from Cruach.

Garreth has no clue about any of this and thinks if he can seduce Lucia, everything will be great and they can go off and create Lykae Valkyrie babies together. Garreth can’t understand why Lucia doesn’t want to be with him because he can sense her need and knows she enjoys the foreplay they have together. But she’s weak when it comes to Garreth and if they keep playing the slap and tickle game, she’ll be Cruach bait. She runs away and goes off to join the Accession games, and for a year Garreth is one step behind Lucia, tracking her, as well as protecting her.

As the games come to an end, Lucia is sick with worthy. Not only is she having horrible nightmares, which always happen whenever the Bloody Broken One is about to rise, but she still has to deal with Garreth. Nix has sent her to the Amazon where she may finally find a way to kill Cruach for good. She has to search for an arrow called a dieumort, which is the only weapon that can kill a creature like him. What she doesn’t count on is Garreth finding her, climbing aboard her boat, and pretending to be her husband where he’ll introduce her to even more heavy duty make out sessions. She just has to make sure she doesn’t have sex with him and since he cares about her well being, he respects her wishes, but all for a specific price. Lucia and Garreth become unwilling partners and Garreth is beyond frustrated both in body and heart because Lucia keeps denying him and won’t tell him her secrets.

Kresley is superb at building the tension between Garreth and Lucia in such a way you suffer along with both of them. Lucia gives Garreth a merry chase where he becomes a very different person by the end of this story. But the one thing Kresley makes very certain with Garreth is that he’s a total gentleman. Even though Garreth is aching to claim Lucia, he doesn’t go the whole distance when it comes to their love making. Even when Lucia begs him to take her, he won’t. Nothing screams romance more than a hero who is willing to sacrifice his own pleasure for that of his one true love. These two have the most excellent foreplay scenes, and the first 50 pages or so will have you wanting to take a cold shower. And Garreth is quite the giver in every way even after Lucia shoots him with a few arrows. This is a man who is willing to get down on his knees for a small taste of Lucia’s attention.

We are also given great insight into Lucia. She is one of the most subdued of all of Kresley’s female characters and very loyal to her Valkyrie sisters. She is also close to being a tortured heroine because of her unfortunate past and the way she feels about herself. But, she refuses to be a victim although she thinks her only importance is because of her archery skills. It takes Garreth to show her that she doesn’t have to stand all alone and can rely on him to help her.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince has everything you could want. Great action, luscious love making scenes and a few sneaky twists and turns you won’t see coming. The ending alone will have you dying for the next book. I’ve also come to the realization that the character of Nix is possibly the most important one in this whole series. She is the one responsible for all of these character’s destinies and uses them much like chess pieces on a board so she can reach her ultimate goal. Pay very close attention to whenever Nix pops up because it will give you insight on what is in store for her.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince is yet another winner where I bow down to the masterful storytelling of Kresley Cole.

My my where’s my dark prince?5
Kresley Cole you are one of the few authors that do not disappoint (Crosses fingers no jinxing). Pleasure of a Dark Prince was truly a treat. And paperback too!

We have seen Lucia and Garreth since the first Immortal’s After Dark installment. Last we heard from them Lucia was running from Garreth and he promised his brother Lachlain that he would have her back in two weeks. Now a year later Garreth is puzzeled and pissed that he’s chased Lucia all over the world and now is in the Amazon (Green Hell) which he vowed never to return too. He wants some dang answers, luckily through meddling fingers (Futs Nucking Nix) he’s on a boat with his mate, heehee she’s stuck in the same cabin. What Garreth doesn’t know is that Lucia has secrets, dark dangerous and shameful secrets that only Regin knows about. They are so dark and twisted that they constantly threaten to destroy her every ascension. With all her secrets and past between them, it seems unlikely that they will live to see Nix meddle to the point of goddesshood.

Wow, most series petter out after a few books. In fact the longest I was interested in a series was around 6-7 books. Kresley Cole’s plot line is more in depth and more twisted with each installment. I find myself reading A Hunger Like No Other and thinking wow… that was actually a pretty simple plot line (hey I adored it no critique here) compared to the last few. I’m so happy. With that final epilogue Cole has us opening and closing the book again and again trying to make a ’sneak peak’ or another chapter appear. Please continue to make wonderful characters, hot scenes, butt kicking females, confused males and give Lothaire a chance…. for me?

    Southern Louisiana
    Present day

?Munro, you daft git, pass the ball!? Garreth Mac-Rieve yelled at his kinsman over the thunder and howling winds.

Tonight was their yearly skins-versus-demons rugby match?a tradition for Garreth and his clan, meant to take his mind from the anniversary this day marked. Garreth was barefooted, wearing only jeans and no shirt. Rain pounded in strengthening intervals, turning this abandoned grassy airstrip in bayou country into a mire of muck and turf. Sweat mingled with mud?and some blood.

He almost felt? not numb. And that in itself was a feat.

Munro flipped him off but did finally sling him the ball. The leather was coated in grit, mixing with the filth covering Garreth?s bared chest. He feinted left, then sprinted right around two colossal Ferine demons, shoving his hand in their faces, stiff-arming them.

As he ran, with his heart pounding in his ears, he could forget. The exertion and the aggression were both so welcome, he wanted to beat his bare chest.

The swift Ferines surrounded him, so he tossed the ball to Uilleam, Munro?s twin, who took it in to score. His brothers-in-arms were strong and ruthless contenders, as was he. The beasts inside them loved to fight, to play. Rough.

The demons responded to the goal with trash talk and shoving. Like a shot, Garreth was in the middle.

?You?re raring to fight for an heirless king,? Caliban, the Ferines? leader, sneered. ?Nothing new?you Lykae go through kings like I piss demon brew.?

Of all the sore subjects to bring up, Garreth?s kingship was the one most infuriating. And on this day?

He launched himself at Caliban, but Munro and Uilleam heaved him back. As other demons steered Caliban away from the scuffle, Munro said, ?Save it for the game, friend.?

Garreth spat blood in Caliban?s direction before letting the two lead him away to cool off. While Uilleam and Munro stayed with him, the other Lykae on the team made their way to the sidelines to mingle with the ?cheerleaders.?

The demons took the opportunity to take a timeout and drink demon brew. The only bad thing about playing with demons?one of the few species in the Lore that could contend with the Lykae in a physical contest?was their continual ?brew breaks.? Only seemed fair that Garreth and his kinsmen shoot copious amounts of whiskey to mitigate their advantage. They swilled it straight from the bottle, each one with his own, the Lykae version of Gatorade.

Their cooler was full of fifths.

?You?ve got to let this go, Garreth,? Munro said, taking a deep drink.

Garreth swiped his hand over the back of his neck, getting the feeling that he was being watched. But then, he and all the other players were. Nymphs lined the field, oblivious to the rain, touching themselves and sucking on their own fingers as they impatiently waited for this game to turn into an orgy.

He irritably gazed at the females. ?Why?d you invite them?? he demanded. ?Damn you both, I weary of this. Did you never think that I doona like nymphs??

?Nay,? Uilleam said with a swig. ?Any being that sports a penis likes nymphs.?

Munro drained his bottle and added, ?You canna argue with medical facts.?

Garreth knew Uilleam and Munro meant well, but this was getting old. ?I doona like them. They?re too? too??

    ?Beautiful??

    ?Lusty??

?Easy,? Garreth said. ?They?re too easy. For once I?d like to have a female give me a challenge. One that would no? fall into bed with me because I?m supposedly a king.? When Munro opened his mouth to speak, Garreth said, ?Aye, supposedly.?

Munro shook his head gravely. ?And still you believe Lachlain will return.?

The three had been round and round about this for one and a half centuries, since the time his older brother had vanished after setting out to hunt vampires.

Uilleam and Munro told Garreth that he awaited Lachlain unreasonably. Best accept that his brother was gone, especially after so long had passed since his disappearance. One hundred and fifty years?to the day, this day. They said Garreth hadn?t moved on and accepted his responsibilities as king.

    They were right.

?When will you believe he?s no? coming back?? Uilleam asked. ?Two hundred years from now? Five hundred??

?Never. No? if I still feel he?s alive.? Though vampires had killed the rest of his immediate family, for some reason, Garreth still sensed Lachlain lived. ?No? if I feel it as I do now.?

?You?re as bad off as Bowen,? Uilleam said, finishing his own bottle?and opening another.

Bowen was Garreth?s first cousin, a shell of a man since he?d lost his mate. He spent every waking moment in agony, yet he wouldn?t accept the loss and end his life as most Lykae males would have in his situation. ?No? like Bowen,? Garreth said. ?He saw his mate gored, saw her death. I dinna see such proof with Lachlain.? No, I searched and searched and found? nothing.

    ?Game on!? a demon called.

Garreth shook himself from his memories, swigged whiskey, then mustered to the field with his kinsmen.

Caliban bared his fangs at his opponents, a gesture Garreth returned as the teams huddled up.

Quick snap. Ball in play. Passed to Caliban. Garreth saw his chance, charging for him, pumping his arms for speed? faster? faster? He leapt for the demon, tackling him with all his strength.

As they careened to the ground, a length of Caliban?s horn snapped off, and he bellowed with rage. ?You?re going to pay for that, Lykae!?

For miles, Lucia the Huntress had been stalking her night?s prey, growing increasingly perplexed when the tracks she followed led her closer to what sounded like a battle, echoing with roars and curses.

Mayhem? Without inviting the Valkyrie? And in our territory, too? If beings were going to trespass in order to war, they should at least have the courtesy to invite the host faction to the conflict.

When she came upon the battlefield, Lucia canted her head to the side. Clash of the Loreans, she thought as she beheld modern gladiators?not at war, but at play. Immortal rugby.

Winds whipped along the mile-long field, and lightning flashed above them, mirroring the intensity of the contest. It was like a ceremony celebrating? maleness.

Lucia easily recognized the horned players as demons, and she suspected their shirtless opponents were Lykae. If so, then the rumors were true. The werewolves were in fact encroaching on Valkyrie territory. She was surprised. In the past, they?d kept to themselves, staying at their sprawling compound outside of the city.

Congregating at the sidelines, Nymph spectators trembled with excitement, likely seeing this as no more than a mud-wrestling match between brawny heart-throbs.

A ruthless hit on the field made Lucia raise a brow. Not at the violence?she was a shield maiden after all?but at the unthinking violence. Though these Loreans all trespassed, they were oblivious to an Archer in their midst, one who could inflict serious damage?very swiftly and from a great distance.

Levelheaded Lucia, as she was now known, didn?t comprehend unthinking. But then she didn?t comprehend men. Never had.

Luckily for them, the only violence she?d deliver this eve would be to her targets: two kobolds?vile gnome-like creatures?who?d been seen stalking human young to feed on.

Her sister N?x, the half-mad Valkyrie soothsayer, had dispatched her to these bayous to dispose of them. Lucia had asked Regin to join her, but she?d declined, preferring to play video games in the comfort of their coven over another ?rain-drenched bug hunt.?

Lucia had jumped at the chance. After donning a T-shirt and hiking shorts, she?d strapped on her leather thigh quiver, archer?s glove, and forearm guard. With her trusty bow in hand, she?d set out at once?.

Another brutal hit. She nearly winced at the impact from that one?a piece of horn skipped down the field like a lost helmet?but she wasn?t surprised. Lykae and demons were two of the most brutal species on earth.

Worse, one of those bare-chested males had caught Lucia?s attention. Completely. No matter how badly she wished otherwise, Lucia still noted attractive men, and as the teams skirmished, she couldn?t help but appreciate the power in his towering frame, his speed and agility. Though mud splattered his torso and a shadow of a beard swathed his lean face, she still found him handsome in a rough and tumble way.

His eyes were a burnished gold color with rakish laugh lines fanning out from them. At one time, he?d been happy; he clearly wasn?t now. Tension radiated from his body, anger blazing off him.

When those golden irises flickered a bright ice blue, she confirmed what he was. A Lykae. A werewolf.

An animal. His handsome face masked a beast, literally.

?You call that a hit, you bluidy ponce!? he yelled at one of the demons, the muscles in his neck and chest standing out in strain as he bowed up and bared his fangs. His accent was Scottish, but then most of the Lykae were Highlanders?or they used to be, before homesteading southern Louisiana. ?Aye, Caliban! Go fook yerself!?

Others were drawing him back from a particularly large demon, seeming exasperated, as if the male had been picking fights all night. Probably had. The Lykae were considered a menace in the Lore, with little control over their ferocity. In fact, they seemed to revel in it.

One hundred percent unadulterated male, alpha to the core. And still he was making her? lust. As the game continued, Lucia waited for revulsion to drown out her attraction. And waited.

Yet with each pitiless blow the male gave?and took?an…

    A Problem Solving Fable4
Fables have been used to illustrate problem solving, among many other things, for hundreds of years. Remember Aesop’s fables? Several years ago, Kenneth Blanchard successfully re-introduced using fables to teach problem solving techniques with his book, Who Moved My Cheese. John Kotter replicated that method of instruction with this fun little book, OUR ICEBERG IS MELTING. As with the aforementioned work, I believe this one will garner similar acclaim.

Kotter’s engaging story introduces the 8 principles of problem solving. This can be used in a variety of venues from business, church, child raising, sports, etc. Kotter illustrates how the penguins, faced with a tumultuous dilemma, identified the problem, created urgency, developed a team-building structure, and stepped outside the box. Along the way, the story is entertaining and includes a diverse array of skepticism, cynicism and other challenges that we all face.

The book is also very well illustrated and can easily be read in a couple of hours. It is also readable for almost any age level and would probably make a good reading lesson for children as well. They will certainly be entertained, if not captivated by the illustrations and side notes. Well done.

    This book is a gem!5
This is a wonderful gem of a little book. It uses a parable about a colony of easy-to-relate-to penguins to teach us how to understand and manage successful change. It marks a departure from the data-based research John Kotter is so respected for, and takes us into the realm of everyday life. Everyone, no matter who we are or what we do in life, should read, enjoy and learn from this gem!

    Who Moved My Iceberg?1
This is a children’s book, and I read it in thirty minutes. The “lessons” are so simple that you won’t need any extra time digesting them. The funny thing is, this book is aimed at adults, and not just any adults, but the kind of adults who want to be leaders or agents of change. Ha!

Yes, it’s a problem solving fable, but not ordinary problems: Catastrophic, life-threatening problems. I suppose that you could modify the eight steps to solve ordinary problems, but even then it’s too elementary to be useful.

Step number one is to create a sense of urgency in other people. In this fable, one penguin had to convince the other penguins that their home was doomed to destruction and many of them, especially the old and the young, would die if they didn’t heed his warnings and take drastic action immediately. You see, these penguins had been living on an iceberg for many generations; indeed, it was the only homeland that any of them had ever known or heard about. But one curious penguin had discovered evidence that their iceberg was cracking and melting. The evidence was on the underside of the iceberg, easy enough to see if any penguin cared to look. The curious penguin was convinced that their home would break into little pieces within a couple of months, right in the middle of the dark and stormy winter season. Once the first step is accomplished (i.e. everyone is now convinced of doom and feeling panic), the next seven steps follow simple logic, such as building teamwork, coming up with possible solutions, etc. Yes, as with any decent children’s story, this one has a happy ending. The penguins solve their problem by becoming nomads, moving from one healthy iceberg to the next.

Well, what can we take from this fable, then? If the iceberg is a metaphor for the Earth, shall the human race consider becoming galactic nomads and move from one good planet to another? These penguins didn’t have to fix anything, or learn how to get along with each other, or learn how to share and use resources, or how to create a sustainable existence. All they had to do was move to another place (which, by the way, is precisely what the Europeans did when they came to the “New World”). And there was an endless supply of great places to move to, without the conflict of moving to a place that was already occupied by other penguins. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the human race could just pack up and, after a day or two of travel, arrive on another unspoiled Earth that had no other humans?

And how does this fable work for more ordinary problems? Let’s say that you, a junior employee, think your company is going in the wrong direction. Okay, so you are first supposed to create a sense of urgency within your company: You try to convince fellow key employees that the company will fail under its present leadership. I can just hear The Donald yelling, “You’re Fired!”

But really, how can this story help with the serious problems we are facing today? Did the Bush administration read this book, and did they tell us about WMD in Iraq in order to create a sense of urgency, so we could “solve” the problem of terrorism? Or, did Al Gore read this book, and is he right about the catastrophic consequences of man-made climate change? Ah, but if only the evidence was as clear, and the solution as easy, as in this fable! That is where this fable fails to deliver: Defining complex problems is tremendously more difficult than this fable implies, and creating and implementing solutions is more difficult still. OF COURSE we have to define the problem, find solutions, and have good leadership and teamwork to implement it! But in the real world, it’s easier said than done, and this fable doesn’t help at all with how to do it. In fact, I think that this fable hurts more than it helps, encouraging people, whatever their beliefs, to try to create a sense of urgency in other people, and to take quick, drastic action. That kind of thinking can get us involved in unnecessary wars and using “enhanced interrogation techniques.” It can even create suicide bombers. Think about it.

Bottom line: I think that a 5-year-old kid, and an adult, would learn more about business, leadership, and group dynamics from Sesame Street.

P.S. This book has now been out for 4 years and is still available only in the more expensive hardback edition. I’d like to convince the author of the URGENT! need to publish a less expensive paperback edition, because young kids don’t have so much money to spend on books. Suggestion: Make a manga edition! :-)

    From Publishers Weekly
Harvard Business School professor Kotter, author of the bestselling Leading Change (1996), teams up with executive Rathgeber to offer his contribution to the “business fable” genre. Kotter presents his framework for an effective corporate change initiative through the tale of a colony of Antarctic penguins facing danger-inspired, perhaps, by today’s real-life global warming crisis (or, perhaps, by March of the Penguins’ box office). Under the leadership of one particularly astute bird, a small team of penguins with varied personalities and leadership skills implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. The logic of Kotter’s fictional framework is wobbly at times-his characters live and act very much like real penguins except that one carries a briefcase and another (“the Professor”) cites articles from scholarly journals-and the whimsical tone will not be to everyone’s taste. However, this light, quick read should fulfill its intended purpose: to serve as a springboard for group discussions about corporate culture, group dynamics and the challenges of change.
